To submit an unsolicited manuscript
We believe in giving new authors opportunities. We read all unsolicited novels or picture books that we receive, but we do ask that you carefully follow these guidelines before submitting your manuscript.
Make sure that your work is suitable for us. Look at our current list on our website, in libraries and bookshops. Most books we publish fit into the following categories:
Novels: We will consider novels from 15,000 words.
Picture Books: We will consider stand-alone picture books of fewer than 1,500 words. We do not publish pop-up books, board books, rhyming picture books or series.
We do not currently publish original poetry, film/TV/play scripts, or educational materials.
If your work fits these guidelines please follow the points below:
1. Send your manuscript by post only. We do not accept emailed submissions.
2. For a novel, send a synopsis and the first three chapters, for a picture book, the whole story. There is no need to send illustrations for picture books.
3. Please do not send originals or your only copy of anything. We are not liable for artwork or manuscript submissions.
4. Submissions need to be typed and double spaced so they are easily readable.
5. Address your submission to: Manuscript Submissions, Chicken House, 2 Palmer Street, Frome, Somerset BA11 1DS. You do not need a contact name.
6. Please enclose a self-addressed envelope with adequate postage for the return of your manuscript plus a response letter. If you are outside the UK please obtain International Response Coupons from your post office.
7. We aim to respond to submissions within 3 to 4 months, but cannot guarantee this. Please note that we simply do not have time to give you specific feedback on your work if we do not consider it suitable for our list.
