Tunnels Series Book 2: Deeper
Written by Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams
The Tunnels adventure is far from over for Will Burrows.
In his quest to find his father, Will is plunged even deeper underground. And as if things weren't bad enough already in the heat and darkness, he stumbles across a Styx plot with terrible implications for the world above - and a sister who isn’t finished yet …
The thrilling sequel to the international publishing sensation Tunnels.
‘Swim?’ Chester asked, and swallowed nervously.
‘You can hold your breath for thirty seconds, can’t you, boy?’
‘Yes,’ Chester stammered.
‘Good. This is a small sump, which comes up in another passage. It’s like a ‘U’ tube.’
‘Same as at the back of a loo?’ Chester suggested, his voice brittle with apprehension.
‘Oh nice one, Chester,’ Will said. Drake gave them both a wry look, and then waved them towards the grimy-looking water.
‘In you go.’ Will put his rucksack on his back and approached the pool, hugging the waterproof bag in his arms. He stepped into it without hesitation, each step taking him deeper into the tepid water, and then, with a deep breath, ducked his head under its surface, and was gone. Feeling bubbles brush his face, he pulled himself along using his free hand. He kept his eyes tightly shut, the noise of the water thundering in his ears.
Although the tunnel wasn’t particularly wide, perhaps pinching down to a metre at its narrowest point, it wasn’t proving difficult to negotiate, even though he had the rucksack and waterproof bag to contend with. Despite the fact he thought he was making good progress, he didn’t seem to be getting anywhere. He opened his eyes in the pitch-blackness, which made his heart beat even faster. The water around him felt treacly and resistant.
This was his worst nightmare.
