Dog Lost
Written by Ingrid Lee
Cash is the puppy nobody wants. A pit bull. A dog lost. A shivering wet bundle, Cash arrives in the life of twelve-year-old Mackenzie. And from that moment boy and dog share a love neither has ever known before.
But when Cash is kicked out by Mackenzie’s father, she finds herself lost and alone in a cruel world. Will she ever find her boy again?
A beautifully written, classic animal story from the hugely talented Ingrid Lee. Truly child-centred, this is an exciting yet poignant tale of love and loss as seen through the eyes of a dog and a twelve year-old boy.
Reviews:
'A tough book, a tender book and one I shan’t forget.' MICHAEL MORPURGO
The boot of the car smelled of old oil and stale beer.
Cash cowered behind the spare tyre. She was scared, scared by the noise of the engine and the lurching of the car. After the dark of the boot, the glare of the street lights blinded her. James O’Rourke was still in a rage. He swung Cash out of the car. The collar snapped in his hand. When the dog squatted on the ground in front of a tyre, he kicked at her.
‘Get out of here,’ he yelled. ‘Before I really lose my temper!’ He swiped at her again.
Cash took off. She headed into the dark, scrambling away from the man, away from the bright street. By the time she stopped, she was in the middle of nowhere, in a wide field full of rubble. Rough dark shapes poked out of the ground and Cash picked her way between them. Finally she came to an orange tarpaulin stretched into a makeshift tent between a tangle of brick and wood.
She crawled inside. The boy would come for her. She waited till morning. Then she waited all day.
She never doubted.
Mackenzie would come for her.
